Final update
Hello everyone,
I guess it's time to say this. I've been waiting too long with this information. Too long, maybe.
Purgatorium: A Family Torn Apart is being cancelled.
I truly don't know where to start with this one, but I'll try my best to tell you the story behind development and I suppose, a downfall caused by aspirations.
So, after the success of A Trip to Yugoslavia (which was truly surprising for us back then) I thought that Me, Hades and ADC have to step up "our game". Do something dope with the formula that even if experimental, showed us that some people still like FMV games. After A Trip to Yugoslavia: Director's Cut was released on Steam, I was supposed to apply for "movie studies", if you can call it that, but I needed a fresh material to even go there. I asked Hades and ADC, if they would help me create a short horror ATtY-like experience. They agreed, so we've started. Everything was going smoothly, but after a few months I noticed that the project was getting bigger and bigger. Hades, ADC and myself were putting there so many new ideas, so many new mechanics, that at one point I got lost.
Purgatorium Demo (which you've played) was an almost completed original draft of the game. In my original script, Ann was supposed to open the final padlock with a key hidden in a safe (which was also a puzzle) and then reach the ending where she would be confronted by her dead sister. I was happy with that ending, since I had planned ahead for a sequel, if you guys would like what we would've released. Purgatorium was supposed to be a short 30-1h long experience. Hades on the other hand wasn't so sure, if we were doing the right thing. Then the worst thing happened. We've had our creative differences, but I guess neither of us wanted to say it out loud. I wanted to head in kind of a Resident Evil style production, he wanted Purgatorium to be Silent Hill like.
So I thought, "Okay, I guess he's right". As a scriptwriter for the game, everything got complicated there. Guys were full of ideas, mechanics, monsters and such. I was glad, but I got stuck. I couldn't achieve what Hades had on his mind.
I started taking photos of numerous locations. I was traveling back and forth. Promoting the game on major gaming events in Poland. But that wasn't enough. I had the material, but what was I supposed to do with it. How would I connect it to my original story draft?
Mechanics and ideas kept going, but I couldn't keep up. I've spend a lot of sleepless nights trying to make everything work, but in the end we couldn't reach our version that would satisfy us all.
Before long actors, were leaving the project. Some even left the town where we were recording everything. Some of the files got lost, some got corrupted. Hades and ADC are doing their own things now, while I'm stuck thinking "Should I tell everyone that Purgatorium won't happen?"
I'm sorry, everyone. I thought we could pull it off and get everything right. We wanted to give you the best FMV horror experience that we could achieve. In the end, we couldn't do it and as a head of the project, I screwed up the most and couldn't manage things when it got ambitious. This game means a lot to me, so I'm heartbroken that I have to cancel it. It's like letting a part of you go away. I wish I could finish it myself, but as of right now, I don't have any Unity experience and all of the project files are on Hades Productions end and can't be transferred to me.
I was thinking about stepping down from the game dev scene, because well, I don't really have a team right now. Maybe I'll be back, I don't know. If you guys want to create something, let me know. Thank you all for being here. Your support meant a lot, and I won't forget it.
